round decorative table with braided ribbon on edge of top, griffin feet with paint, gold leaf and images of birds, butterflies and flowers So some of my pieces have shared their inspiration from movies, this one from a broadway. This one is “Bye Bye Birdie”. I first became more aware of the background for the song while watching the “Mad Men” series. The ad agency was doing the search for the person to sing the song, and I became intrigued with the history. Now, I have never seen the broadway, but I’ve heard the song and I do know the script was written when Elvis was drafted, and women all over were so distraught. Their little songbird was leaving, and they weren’t sure when or if he would return. Well my piece is something I was working on this summer. I painted it with all of these colors relating to certain birds in the area, then I added the gold leaf and started designing this composition with many types of birds. Earlier in the summer I found a birdhouse at the dollar store that was a cute little camper. I hung it in our pergola, and a bird made it her nest. Soon there were cute little chirps coming from the house as the babies hatched. I was working on the piece under the pergola, and all the while being serenaded by these cute little babies. The design started telling the story of their lives under my pergola. As I finished the piece, I noticed the little babies leaving one at a time and realized they were leaving to start their lives. That’s why I called it “Bye Bye Birdie”.
